I love unexpected travel! I was doing my usual airfare sale research (Have you subscribed to get my airfare deals?) and I found a fare to Madrid from Austin for $405 round trip! Yes, $405 with Delta from Austin to Madrid with only one quick stop in Atlanta. Unbelievable! The fare sale happened to line up with J’s birthday, so it would be the perfect way to celebrate.

James and I love traveling to Germany, and Munich is probably our favorite city – not just in Germany, but of all the cities we’ve visited around the world. Munich has it all: museums, cafes, art, history, shopping, and, of course, beer. When most folks think of Germany, they think of men in lederhosen, women in dirndls, big glasses of beer, and Oktoberfest. You don’t have to go to Oktoberfest to get all of the best of Munich’s laid-back beer traditions, though. From spring, when the chestnut trees are blooming, through fall, when the autumn chill starts setting in, the Biergartens are festive and fun places to drink a Maß of beer, eat hearty food, and enjoy the company of several thousand of your fellow beer drinkers.

The Best 40th Birthday Trip


 

If we could add up all of the Guinness James has drunk in his lifetime… actually, we probably don’t want that on record. Let’s just say, James enjoys Guinness. One day, I was checking our frequent flyer miles with American Airlines and figured since I was on the site I’d see what it would take to get us to Ireland for James’ 40th birthday. Seeing that we had plenty of miles and would only need to pay $45 each, it was a no brainer. We’re off to Dublin!
